Wisslax 1st - 4th Grade Boys Program Outline

 Wisslax 1st – 4th Grade BOYS LACROSSE

In 2010 we revamped our 1st – 4th grade program based on the model used by some of the most successful youth lacrosse programs in the country. (Conestoga, Three Village Lacrosse in Long Island (www.3vlax.com), Abington, Ashbee)  Through analyzing their programs we realized that these successful lacrosse hotbeds started with a foundation of In-House lacrosse, especially at the young ages, to grow and nurture their existing young lacrosse players and new lacrosse players entering their system.  Our combination of IN-House and Travel at the 1st – 4th grade level is not a new concept and has proven to be a great way to build the young lacrosse player and we are excited to see it build the next generation of Wisslax Lacrosse player.

In-House League:Our In-House league offers lacrosse to boys in grades 1st through 4th. This league, which is the core of our boys’ program, is designed to teach boys the basics of the games, including throwing, catching, scooping, shooting and offensive and defensive positioning. We seek to accomplish that goal by placing the boys in an environment best-suited for their level of play. All of the boys who participate in our In-House league receive an equal amount of playing time, provided they attend and participate in the practices and games. The In-House program is divided into two groups:

1st - 2nd Graders:The boys are divided up into four or more teams based on elementary school attended, assigned coaches and assistant coaches. We hold one practice per week on Wednesdays at Lower Gwynedd Elementary School and one game per week Saturday mornings at Temple University - Ambler Campus.

3rd-4th Graders:This group of boys is divided into equally separated teams. Typically, we have 4-6 teams. To create the teams, we use a ranking system that assigns a rating based on each boy’s experience and skill level. The rating system comes from the coaches, who are asked to rank the boys at the beginning of each season using a numerical ranking system. We then assign boys in a manner that ensures, to the extent feasible, that we’ll have parity amongst the teams. During the Spring games are played Saturdays mornings at Temple University - Ambler Campus.  The 3rd & 4th graders will practice Wednesday and Friday evening at Lower Gwynedd Elementary School.

3rd & 4th Travel League:Our Travel team offers select 3rd & 4th grade boys a more competitive lacrosse environment in SEPYLA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Lacrosse Association). The league is aimed at those boys who have more advanced skills and are committed to the game. Boys must participate (not just register) in our In-House league practices and games in order to play in our Travel league, and they will have one travel game on Sunday.  If a boy wants to participate in our Travel League and he also plays another Spring sport, we expect that he will make lacrosse his priority sport in the Spring. While we aim to provide all players with equal playing time, attendance and effort at practice and games can affect playing time. Additionally, our travel coaches reserve the right to play who they view as their strongest players during critical stages of the game.  Our home field for Travel competition is at Penllyn Woods and there is usually an even number of home and away games.  Additional costs may arise for end of season tournaments or additional ref fees.
